Things to Do in Houston for Men (12 Ideas)

Houston is a big, hot, spread-out city, and a lot of guys here settle into the same loop. Work, the couch, maybe a bar on Friday. If you searched for things to do in Houston for men, you are probably looking for something with a bit more point to it. Here are twelve options that get you outside, working with your hands, or in a room with other men who showed up on purpose.

Get outside and move

1. Paddle Buffalo Bayou

The bayou runs through the middle of the city and gives you a view of the skyline you will never get from the freeway. Rent a kayak or canoe, or join a guided paddle. Go early from spring through fall, before the heat settles in. Bring water and a hat.

2. Run or ride the bayou trails

Buffalo Bayou Park, the Memorial Park loop and the Bayou Greenways give you miles of paved and dirt trail inside the city limits. A standing 6 a.m. meetup with one or two other guys will do more for your consistency than any app on your phone.

3. Fish the Gulf Coast

Galveston, Texas City and Freeport are all within a short drive. Pier fishing is cheap and easy to start. Get your Texas fishing license and check the current Texas Parks and Wildlife rules before you go, then bring a buddy and a cooler.

4. Hike and camp outside the city

Brazos Bend State Park, southwest of Houston, has flat trails, wildlife and an observatory. Sam Houston National Forest to the north has the Lone Star Hiking Trail if you want a real overnight. Reserve campsites early, because good weekends fill up.

Work with your hands

5. Do a garage night

Pick a project, bring your tools and let the older guys in the room show the younger ones how it is done. It is the easiest way to learn a skill and meet people without the awkward small talk. MenDoing runs garage nights for exactly this reason. See what is coming up.

6. Take a trade class

Houston’s makerspaces and community college continuing education programs offer welding, woodworking, leatherwork and basic electrical. You walk out with a skill and a finished project, and you spend a few weeks around the same group of guys.

7. Smoke a brisket

This is Texas. Pick a cut, pick a pit, invite four friends, and start at sunrise. A cook-off turns into an all-day hangout without anyone having to plan it.

Compete and test yourself

8. Join a rec league

Softball, flag football, kickball, soccer and pickleball leagues run across the city all year. You do not need to be good. You need to show up every week, which is how teammates become friends.

9. Train jiu-jitsu or boxing

Most gyms offer a free trial class. Nothing humbles you or bonds you to a stranger faster. Pick a gym with a friendly beginner class and give it a month before you decide.

10. Try karts or axe throwing

Not everything has to be self-improvement. Grab three friends, pay for an hour, and talk trash. Competition with low stakes is a good way to get to know people.

Show up for the city

11. Catch a home game

The Astros, Texans and Rockets all play here, and the cheap seats with a group of four beat a solo ticket every time. Go early, walk the stadium, and make it a tradition.

12. Volunteer for a Saturday

The Houston Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity Houston both put volunteers to work on real jobs: sorting, packing, framing, painting. You will sweat, you will be useful, and you will meet guys who care about the same things you do.

Do something with your hands, outside, with other men. Then do it again next week.

How to pick one

Start with what you want most out of the next three months.

  • More friends: choose something that repeats weekly with the same people, like a rec league, a gym class or a standing run.
  • A new skill: choose a garage night, a trade class or a cook-off.
  • Better shape: choose trail running, jiu-jitsu or paddling.
  • A bigger purpose: choose a volunteer shift with a group.

Whatever you choose, do not plan it alone. Text two guys and set a date. If you do not have two guys yet, read our guide on how to make guy friends in Houston or look at men’s activity groups in Houston.

Skip the planning

If you would rather just show up, MenDoing runs small-group events across Houston: garage nights, fishing trips, cook-offs and builds. You reserve a spot, you show up, and the rest takes care of itself. Browse upcoming events or learn what MenDoing is about.
